Lockhart is the BBQ Capital of Texas! There are four BBQ restaurants in Lockhart. The restaurants estimate that about 5,000 people visit their establishments each week. This would be roughly 250,000 people a year who eat delicious BBQ in Lockhart. On the second weekend of June every year, Lockhart celebrates its position on the historic Chisholm Trail by holding a four-day festival. Lockhart encompasses a nine-block historical district centered around its magnificent courthouse. Beautiful historic homes line the streets west of the courthouse square.
First, tour the newly restored Caldwell County Courthouse, built in 1894 of Muldoon limestone and Pecos red sandstone. Although originally equipped with electricity, it had no indoor plumbing. Later, broom closets were converted into restrooms, and it is said when the first water bill was received, the county judge was so shocked at the charges he padlocked the restrooms. Visit the Baker Theater, Eugene Clark Library and Smithy's (original 1885 Kreuz Market). The Clark Library is the oldest continuously used library in Texas. Built in 1899, the library is an outstanding example of the French Renaissance style. President William H. Taft was one of many noted speakers who addressed the people of Lockhart from the library stage.
